Submission URL: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=modsimworkshop2024
EasyChair Submission Deadline: Sunday, May 26, 2024 (11:59 pm PDT; 6:59 am UTC)
Notification of Acceptance: Monday, June 10, 2024 (via e-mail)

To promote advancements in modeling and simulation (ModSim) research, we are soliciting input in the form of abstracts. If accepted, author(s) will be invited to host a short presentation and/or poster at the annual gathering of our community, the Workshop on Modeling & Simulation of Systems and Applications (ModSim 2024).

This year's workshop theme is ModSim for Sustainable Computing, which will tackle ModSim approaches to characterize and model sustainability as a holistic property of the computing ecosystem. A main point of emphasis is technological sustainability, defined as the ability to sustain the unprecedented growth of computing needs through architecture and applications designs that are feasible in practice and sustainable by technical and environmental metrics. Specific areas of interest are defined in the Topic Areas subsection of this call.

As in years past, the emphasis at ModSim 2024 is on methods, tools, best practices, projects, and initiatives that address challenges and achieve goals for modeling performance, power, reliability, and sustainability of high-performance systems under realistic application workloads. Submissions related to this year's workshop theme, imparting lessons learned from specific projects, methods, tools, and use cases, are highly encouraged.

All abstracts must be submitted through EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=modsimworkshop2024) no later than Sunday, May 26, 2024 (11:59 pm PDT; 6:59 am UTC). Those with accepted abstracts will be notified via e-mail on Monday, June 10, 2024. Domestic travel to ModSim 2024 is available for full-time students at U.S.-based academic institutions and is supported by a National Science Foundation travel grant.

Topic Areas

Abstract contributions should relate to the workshop theme ModSim for Sustainable Computing. Within the overall theme, subcategories of interest include:

Modeling and Simulation of Energy-efficient Technologies from the Edge to the Extreme. This area addresses new methods, tools, and frameworks for modeling, simulation, and emulation, as well as new areas for applying ModSim of performance, power, reliability, and sustainability at all scales of computing.

Modeling and Simulation's Influence on the Evolving Computing Ecosystem. Microprocessors, memory devices, storage, and input/output (I/O), as well as how these technologies are used by application software, profoundly impact current and future computing systems in terms of their performance, function, reliability, predictability, power dissipation, cost, and sustainability. Submissions can characterize or provide use cases that describe how ModSim is keeping up—or not—with the evolution of computing.

Modeling of Computing Sustainability. ModSim methods of interest span from the architecture level to the total cost of ownership (TCO).

Metrics of Sustainability. Emphasis is on energy, carbon dioxide, and potentially TCO. However, metrics proposed beyond these areas are welcome.

Sustainability of Modeling and Simulation Software and Tools. This topic area explores the long-term viability of ModSim software, focusing on sustainable open-source practices, workforce development, and best practices in software sustainability. It underscores the importance of creating and maintaining software tools that can adapt and grow with the evolving needs to model future computing systems.

Abstract Submission Guidelines
There is no set word limit for abstract submissions. However, please limit the submission to one page (letter or A4 size) with no smaller than 11-point font type. The abstract should provide an overview that adequately summarizes the topic(s) presented and any proposed impact on ModSim research or techniques, especially any relevant to the workshop theme.

The following details a proposed abstract layout and points to consider, all within the workshop's theme:

Abstract Title
Primary research area:
ModSim of Energy-efficient Technologies from the Edge to the Extreme
ModSim's Influence on the Evolving Computing Ecosystem
Modeling of Computing Sustainability
Metrics of Sustainability
Sustainability of ModSim Software and Tools

The abstract should include specific aspects of the work and answer questions, such as:

What is being modeled (e.g., performance, reliability, power, other)?
What is the target application?
What modeling techniques are being used?
What is novel about the approach versus current state of the art?
Are preliminary results or any notable lessons learned available?

Dr. Sudhakar Yalamanchili Award
The Dr. Sudhakar Yalamanchili Award (https://wwwqa.bnl.gov/modsim/sudhaaward.php) will be presented to the researcher who demonstrates an "outstanding contribution to ModSim" as derived from a Contributed Abstract and Presentation/Poster Session hosted during the ModSim 2024 Workshop. ModSim 2024 Workshop Organizing Committee members will evaluate the abstracts/presentations/posters and make the final selection. To qualify, a person must be a graduate student or postdoctoral researcher within six years of her/his highest awarded degree at the time of the ModSim conference. All submissions that satisfy these criteria are eligible for the award.
